Smakdak

Smakdak is a wooden pavilion on top of the new built tower in the Smakkerlaarsveld masterplan in Utrecht. Studioninedots won an ambitious competition for the new masterplan and buildings next to Utrecht centraal. On top of one of the buildings there is space for a sky bar with great views over Utrecht. A great central hub for meetings, hang outs or just to enjoy the great views. Being very restricted by the elements of the residential tower underneath, the shape of this pavilion is formed by a few parameters, the offset from the sides, so you can walk around it and enjoy the views. The column grid in the center, which is connected to the structure and loads underneath, the fire escape and elevator entrance, which are fixed. And last but not least the wish to make something special that is not a boring box.

The result is an remarkable oddly shaped tent like roof, with a structure made from LVL, a engineered wood that is very strong and can be made in any shape. To protect the wood from the weather elements it is coated in (old)pink hotspray with a grid texture. This will make the pavilion recognizable from a distance, which will make the pavilion stand out in the grey city roof scape.
